PILESGROVE TWP. — Meals on Wheels of Salem County invites amateur, professional and high school artists to participate in the 13th Annual Giant Pumpkin Carve scheduled from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Salem County Fairgrounds.
More than 70 giant pumpkins weighing from 70 pounds to 100 pounds each are carved. Artists register at 8 a.m., choose their pumpkin and begin carving.
All carving must be finished by 4 p.m. At 6 p.m. pumpkins are lit and the exhibit opens to the public for judging. Winners are announced at 9 p.m. and prizes are awarded.
Meals on Wheels offers six cash prizes in the categories of Scariest, Prettiest, Funniest, Most Halloween, Most Original, and People’s Favorite. There is an additional $50 prize to the student who receives the highest number of votes in the Under 18 category. All participants receive a T-shirt.
Due to increasing popularity of this event, pre-registration is required.
Artists are strongly encouraged to use original designs. There is no entrance fee for artists. Artists not available the day of the event may make arrangements to carve the evening before.
Former winners include Molly Sanger Carpenter, Deborah Smith, Bruce Garrity, Anne and Joe Dorety, Roxanna Hurst, Elizabeth Irving, David Dorrell, Tom Gamber, Margo Koehler, Katie Bitter, Tom Kopec, Jackie Steves, Sally Massimino, Marcia Allman, Mark Quinette, Katy Mortimer Rawlins and Theresa Cipriano.

Admission to the Giant Pumpkin Carve is $5 for adults and free for children 3 and under. All proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels.
