American Legion Band

Salem American Legion BandThe Salem American Legion Band performs in Salem County playing seasonal and patriotic concerts, special events, nursing homes and churches.  Everyone who plays a band instrument is welcome to join the band.  Members abilities range from novice to professional and ages from twelve to eighty-something years old.

History of the Salem American Legion Band

The band has played continuously for more than 60 years since being founded in 1947 by servicemen returning from World War II.  During the first year they practiced their marching skills on Market Street in Salem and played at 28 functions and 9 competitions earning 4 first place and 3 second place awards in competition. The band has played for several famous people including Governor Alfred Driscoll (1948) Richard Nixon (1952) and at numerous special events, including the opening of the Memorial Hospital in Salem County, Hancocks Bridge, Salem Memorial Day Parade, and the Miss America Parade in Atlantic City, leading the parade with 48 musicians, a color guard, drum major and conductor.

The American Legion Band was named “Citizen of the Year” in 1990 by the City of Salem.  Practice is on most Tuesday evenings and performances are given at area nursing homes, churches, special events and regularly scheduled concerts.
